Generative engine optimization (GEO)
GEO is two jobs that share an acronym: slow training-corpus presence, and fast live-retrieval citation. Motif does not optimize either for you. It tells you whether a person who arrived from an assistant paid.
The 60-word definition
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring pages so ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews cite or recommend them. Answer engine optimization (AEO) covers much of the same work with a Google-answer bias. Neither acronym is a ranking Motif will invent.
Two surfaces, two clocks
Training-corpus presence updates when a vendor ships a new model. Live-retrieval citation updates when a search-index or user-fetch bot recrawls you and a person later clicks. Most GEO guides conflate them. Motif will not. Crawler hits and human referrers are different series.
What Motif adds that a GEO checklist cannot
A schema change is a hypothesis. Motif stores first touch, joins Stripe, and returns the single recommendation the arithmetic supports. If ChatGPT sent visits and nobody paid, the ranking says so. If the week is quiet, you get silence.
What Motif will not do
Motif does not scrape assistants to score 'share of voice.' It does not attach a Search Console query to a visitor. It does not call observed return ROI without a spend denominator you supply. Direct and unknown stay visible and cannot win.

- GEO vs SEO vs AEO - Three acronyms, two surfaces, one ranking that is allowed to stay silent.
- How to measure GEO - First touch, Stripe, Search Console aggregates. No invented ROI.
- Citations are not customers - A model naming you is not a visit. Motif waits for the click, then the payment.
- llms.txt, robots.txt, sitemap.xml - What Motif publishes, what it claims, and what remains contested.
- Schema Motif actually ships - FAQPage, Breadcrumb, ItemList, DefinedTerm, HowTo, Dataset. Visible copy and JSON-LD stay one catalog.
- GEO playbook - Six steps Motif will stand behind. No citation-dashboard theater.
- Google AI Overviews - Zero-click answers are invisible to a JavaScript tracker. Motif says so.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is optimizing web content so generative assistants cite, quote, or recommend it. It is two problems: training-corpus presence (slow) and live-retrieval citation (fast). Motif measures the people who click through and the Stripe payments that follow, not the citation itself.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
In practice the terms overlap. GEO leans toward ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. AEO leans toward answer-shaped Google surfaces. Motif treats a person from gemini.google.com as Gemini and a person from google.com search as organic. The acronym does not change first touch.
Does GEO drive revenue?
It can, if a person clicks and pays. Proving it requires first-touch storage that GA4 will not give you by default. Motif is that join. We will not publish a fake multi-site conversion table we did not measure.
How long does GEO take?
Live retrieval can move in days to weeks after crawl. Training-corpus answers move on vendor model release. Plan for both clocks. A page can appear in ChatGPT search next week and stay absent from the default model for a year.
What is the highest-leverage GEO move Motif will endorse?
Ship a short direct-answer block, mirror visible questions in FAQPage JSON-LD, and measure whether assistant referrers produce customers. Princeton's GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., 2024) reported visibility gains from statistics and citations on the retrieval surface. Motif will not restyle that paper as Motif cohort data.
